My thread will provide you a basic understanding of the Tai-Kradai languages. Zhuang or Vah Cuengh would be my primary focus here since that's the language that I'm currently learning and also it's the Tai-Kradai language with the most available materials online, out of all the Tai-Kradai languages spoken in South China. Though I'll occasionally dabble into other Tai-Kradai languages as well, such as Hlai, Bouyei, Dong, and Tai Lue/Tai Neua. Without further ado, let's begin.

Unlike certain Han nationalists have assumed, the Vah Cuengh R is neither identical to Mandarin L nor to Korean/Japanese R, it's not even a liquid or a trill, but a voiced velar fricative. It's a bit similar to the voiced uvular fricative R in French, but pronounced a bit forward in the mouth. The consonants Mb and Nd: these would probably cause more problems for beginners than the R mentioned above since they're voiced implosive consonants. That is, the airstream is controlled by moving the glottis downward in addition to expelling air from the lungs. This consonant is most often found in languages of Sub-Saharan Africa and SE Asia, and is completely absent in Northern Asian languages like Mandarin, Korean, and Japanese. As a Mandarin speaker, I still have difficulties pronouncing them. The consonant Gy: this one is rather straightforward you just pronounce it the way it is written, however in some Vah Cuengh dialects or varieties this consonant would be pronounced as Jy or Zy. So for instance, the word Gyo Mbaiq (Thanks) in standard Vah Cuengh may be pronounced as Jyo Mbaiq or Zyo Mbaiq in certain regional varieties.

Bo Sang - High Mountain / Bo Daemq (Low Mountain). The word Bo in Vah Cuengh means mountain or hill, in some other dialects or varieties it may be spelled as Bya. Here's another difference between Vah Cuengh and Northern Asian languages: Vah Cuengh almost always puts the adjective or modifier after the noun it modifies, whereas in Northern Asian languages such as Mandarin, Korean, and Japanese the opposite is true, they put the adjective or modifier before the noun it modifies. Boux Laux - Big Person, Adult / Boux Iq - Small Person, Kid. The word Boux in Vah Cuengh means person. When referring to a kid, instead of saying Boux Iq you can also say Lwg Nyez. Boux Biz - Fat Person / Boux Byom or Boux Roz - Thin Person. Roz is another way to say thin. Baih Hingz - Winning Side / Baih Saw - Losing Side. The word Baih means side. Mwh Cengx - Winter (Literally "Cold Season") / Mwh Ndat - Summer (Literally "Hot Season"). The word Mwh is the word for season or time. Mwh Caemx - Spring (Literally "Cool Season") / Mwh Raeuj - Autumn (Literally "Warm Season"). Hoed Lai - Talk Too Much / Hoed Noix - Talk Too Little, Taciturn. Hoed means speech or talk. Boux Ndei - Good or Benevolent Person / Boux Yak - Bad or Evil Person. Roen Gyae - Long Way / Roen Gyawj - Short Way. Roen means road or way, and might be a cognate of the Malay word Jalan. Vaq Raez - Long Pants / Vaq Dinj - Short Pants. Vaq means pants or trousers. Baih Gwnz - Upside, On Top of / Baih Laj: Downside, Beneath. Fwngz Swix - Left Hand / Fwngz Gvaz - Right Hand. Fwngz means hand in Vah Cuengh. In some other Tai-Kradai languages, the word for hand may be pronounced as Meuu. This seems to be a cognate to the word Kamay in certain Austronesian languages, which also means hand. Ninz Caeux - To Sleep Early / Ninz Gvaiz - To Sleep Late. Ninz means to sleep. Mbwn Rongh - Dawn, Daybreak / Mbwn Laep - Getting Dark, Dusk. Mbwn means sky. Buh Saw - Clean Clothes / Buh Heiz - Dirty Clothes. Buh means clothes. Bak Haeuj - Entrance / Bak Ok - Exit. Bak means mouth in Vah Cuengh, might be a cognate to the word Baba or Bibig in certain Austronesian languages, which also means mouth. Gaiq Naek - Heavy Object / Gaiq Mbaeu - Light Object. Gaiq means object or thing. Edit: It turns out that Vah Cuengh has many words to describe hot and cold. For the word hot, some dialects or varieties say Hwngq instead of Ndat. And for cold, some of them say Yin/Yaenj, Nau, Nit, Ndangj, or Gyoet/Gaet instead of Cengx or Caemx.
