I think the original purpose was to grow vines like grapes and certain flowers But then people just abused the concept and used it for decoration instead to give an effect of a corridor or something It's like plastering Hanzi as a decoration when you can't even read it, you just like the look of it. So it's lost it's original purpose and it's just there for people who like to look at it.
