But they die by the hand (shot) of another person rather than the one bent on seeking revenge? The person bent on revenge always wants to be the one who gets to kill them but they don't. They just see their enemy get killed in front of them. And this happens because they were about to get killed by the enemy and someone had to save them. Deep down the actual killer wants to be absolved of this "guilt" of having killed the enemy of the person they were rescuing because they know how much hatred that person had. So they restrain the person they just rescued from going at it with their bare hands and further "save" them from destroying themselves with pent up agony. I don't know if that person is ended up "saved" however. I think if that person really wants to experience "being saved" they need to stomp on the dead person's face like dozens of times at least. Otherwise how would they be able to forget all that hatred?

Otherwise how would they be able to forget all that hatred? Yes I think this might be an extension of the Kill Steal which is a popular trope tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KillStealIt also reminds me of the trope where the angry person keeps attacking the dead body even though they have already killed them, then someone has to push them away to make them stop beating the corpse. But that's something else. I think what you described is a variant of the Kill Steal. I think it is a way for the "angry" person to not get carried away by going on an emotional rampage. The person who steals the kill probably just wants a simple death to get them out of the way rather than for the companion to go nuts and use up all their energy and wrath (if they are on a mission with a more important goal). Either that or they were just sort of selfish and wanted to get the "credit" for killing that person.
