Current day Tokyo, Japan is pretty much close to Cyberpunk already. Yeah I guess so! But a theme I noticed with the cyberpunk imagery is that it should be somewhat gritty. There is meant to be a dystopian, oftentimes polluted society of high tech advancements juxtaposed against low income and extreme social class division. Imagine a filthy rich CEO of an advanced robot factory, who pretty much rules over a poor tech hipster that lives in a high rise slum and tinkers gadgets for a living. I think that's what cyberpunk is all about?

Yeeahh I forgot about that film Bladerunner. It is cyberpunk and it has scenes with Asian enclave themes. I think I might watch it again lol. This scene is showing the Japanese part I think: Do you know any other cyberpunk films?

Bladerunner was the original cyberpunk. It was sooo way ahead of its time.
I heard there's a new bladerunner film in the works.

I hope that new movie you mentioned is going to be a sequel or a prequel.
I think I felt a little weird when I first saw the movie and found out that Deckard was some kind of android as well. But I would watch that movie from time to time because of the fantastic imagery. The bonus features of the dvd revealed every behind the scenes detail. The story itself was kind of slow kind of like other Ridley Scott movies that build on suspense lol.

Bladerunner was the original cyberpunk. It was sooo way ahead of its time. I heard there's a new bladerunner film in the works. Perhaps it was what made cyberpunk famous particularly in the western hemisphere , but it wasn't the original cyberpunk. The film itself was an adaptation of P.K.Dick's novel, 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'
It's also interesting to note that Japan had Akira around the same time so the concept wasn't unfamiliar to the Japanese even before this time. Also Astro Boy is set in a cyberpunk-like city; the original TV series ran in 1963 .

Oh I see. You are quite well versed in cyber punk history. I think there is a need for an anthology about the origin and development of cyberpunk. Maybe there already is one. If not you should create one.

Much of Cyberpunk was influenced by the 80s Japan, when Japan was perceived to be a technological and economic juggernaut which in turn was inspired by East Asian cityscapes like Shanghai and Hong Kong back then. Both Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner's streetscapes were based on Hong Kong and Tokyo. In fact, East Asia is a popular setting for cyberpunk and other futuristic genres which include sci-fis like Pacific Rim. Here's an interesting discussion about the connection between Asian cities and Cyberpunk.

I think my interest in Cyberpunk history originates from my interest in Asian cityscapes. I've traveled around and am quite interested in learning about other cultures. Interestingly enough, I found that while for more people knowing more about the world opens up one's mind, I find my mind more closed.
