I don't know exactly what Japanese people do but they make "surprise" into a really cute thing. Like they open their eyes really wide open and go "Heeeeiiii????" and then go in a deep tone "Don don nei, nei!". I don't know what Chinese do to try to make "surprise" into a cute thing. @thewalrus; @princevaliant; mrc; @defiancexyz; Same question goes for Korea. |

It just seems like that expression is a playful expression between adults and it was appropriated by children. On the other hand the Japanese expression seems to be like little children talking and adults formalized it.

I think that's why Japanese culture has a lot more cuteness in its packaging, marketing, etc.

哇 (wa) is very commonly used exclamation for surprise. There's also 哎哟 (aiyo) although in this case, it's more similar to the English awwww... and on the girly side.
The Japanese versions are interesting and I sort of have a feel of what you mean by cute packaging. Their version of ouch is "itai/itte". It's almost impossible for those expressions to reach very high decibels compared to 'ouch' in other languages.
