It's like they couldn't find an Asian worthy enough of master's teachings. They discovered that whites were more worthy, have stronger hearts, have more resources and intelligence, etc.

I think it's the typical overused White male protagonist trope. A brave adventurous and confident White male goes to these foreign exotic lands to learn the ancient exotic secrets of the East. Then he manages to conquer and defeat the people. Usually he also gets romantically and or sexually involved with the Asian girl. I think it panders to White male fantasies.

So to answer the question of where did this idea come from, it comes from the White male mind or desire to be enamoured with exotic Asian things, but at the same time proving they are better than the natives or locals, due to their intrinsic Whiteness which makes them pretty much omnipotent. Like yes they may get injured but they never die.
