While there are two Asians I feel it's still damaging because they allowed it and condoned and may have even supported the idea. And they may not necessarily identify as Chinese when not cosplaying and therefore would be misrepresenting and appropriating Chinese culture to a set of common visual stereotypes and tropes, ie dressing up as "Chinese" for fun and carrying Chinese things like panda toys and dimsum baskets or wok pans and stuff like that and thus it is problematic in this sense.
