As a Huaren with a Siamese citizenship, I have to admit that I have much more aversion for Thailand than a feeling of pride or love for the country. Lately, I often ponder again and again that "why my ancestors have to move to Siam and why does my parents have to be born in this land". In fact, I often feel that I should rather be born up north in China or anywhere else in East/Northeast Asia rather than somewhere in Indochina.
I don't really consider myself as a Siamese but as a international not identifying with any-country type of guy with Chinese ancestry. I don't really care if others will call me a self-hater, traitor, disgrace to my nationality as a Thai citizen.
Here are some reasons for my strong distaste of Thailand. I'm sorry if some of them sound rather ridiculous and
1. Climate- the weather in Thailand such as Bangkok, SUCKS big time. With an average yearly temperature of 30 celsius combined with very strong sunshine and high humidity, it is like living in a freaking, sweating sauna for 99% of the year. You will always have that nasty sticky feeling of sweat the whole time. Only the monsoon rain help reliefs the nightmarish climate. There is no such thing as a cool season.
2. City planning- Bangkok looks really crowded and unorganized with a lot of cars and traffic problems. While other parts of Thailand just look rundown for some reason.
3. The look of the buildings- There is a lot of run-down buildings and houses with black and white spots from the rain and humidity everywhere in Bangkok.
4. Race and Phenotype- I never consider myself as Thai due to the fact that I noticeably look more Northeastern Asian (despite my slightly tanned skin) than most of the locals here who look much more Southeast Asian. The majority of Siamese that I saw everyday are basically Tai-Kradaified Mon-Khmer/Austroasiatics and a lot of them look very exotic and racially ambiguous that it makes me see myself phenotypically as a foreigner than a local.
5. Location- I don't like the area where my house is located in. It has a really messy and unorganized atmosphere with a lot of cars around.
6. Music and Entertainment- I don't like most Thai music, TV series and movies . Most of them focused too much on love, relationship, fights and breakups between bfs and gfs which I found really retarded and idiotic. Don't let me get start on the soap operas, the main theme are basically female characters screaming and beating each other up to get the males they want.
There might be more reasons that I cannot think of right now.
Anyways, I which I am a Chinese or some other East/Northeast Asian citizen right now than belonging to an Indochinese country that is Siam aka Thailand where my family are living at this same moment.
Is this an identity crisis? Thoughts? What are your suggestions?
