I saw this in Costco the other day. I was flabbergasted. People on forums said Southern Chinese and Northern Vietnamese are pale. So if that's true this is just evidence of honourary Whiteness. Also pandas are Japanese.

I notice that the representative city for China is Hong Kong. It seems to be very British-centric and seems to draw from rather outdated European stereotypes and views.
In his travels, the Portuguese historian Diogo do Couto described Japanese men as "whiter than the Chinese" and even compared Japanese Christian converts favorably to Indian ones. The latter "are black and of small sense, they are subsequently very difficult to improve and turn into good Christians" while the Japanese "usually become converted, not on some whimsical ulterior motive but only in obedience to the Lord's command since they are white and of good understanding and behavior"
This was written in the 17th century. As you can see, very antiquated views that we now know aren't true. Today there are more Christians in India than Japan and the Japanese are mostly agnostic, more so than India.

I think he just wanted to point out some common misconceptions and did not really want to be white. Being white doesn't interest me the least bit and I doubt he cares for a white identity either.

Why do you want to be white though. I don't want to be White but I just thought the book was dumb and it showcases the honorary Whiteness of Japanese. Also sociologically Japanese are "White" and I think it goes back to the 19th and 20th century power dynamics which largely shapes our ideas of other countries today. I think that in terms of skin colour there is actually not much natural difference among East Asians. Korean females especially take better care of their skin and invest heavily in their skin routine to maintain a pale and youthful glow. I do think on average that the skin tone darkens somewhat as one goes southward, but it's not as drastic or obvious as shown in the children's book. Also I find that Japanese aren't actually as pale as Koreans on average.
